Deep Tissue Injuries (DTIs) are a significant concern in residential care settings. This study, analyzing data from over 200,000 DTIs across 4,845 skilled nursing facilities, provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of DTIs and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key findings from this five-year analysis include:

  • COVID-19 Impact: DTI incidence surged during the early pandemic (2020-2021), peaking in 2020 with a 31.5% increase.
  • Stabilization of Rates: DTI prevalence and incidence have stabilized in the past two years (2022-2023), following the initial pandemic surge.
  • Prevalence Trends: The majority of DTIs occur at the heel, followed by the sacrum/buttock’s locations. A smaller number occurred at other sites such as foot and toes.

This study demonstrates the power of digital wound care solutions like Swift Skin & Wound for:

  • Real-World Data Collection & Quality Monitoring: Enables the collection of large-scale, real-world data for robust epidemiological analysis.
  • Improved Understanding: Provides valuable insights into DTI trends, risk factors, and the impact of interventions.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Supports evidence-based decision-making for DTI prevention and treatment.
